Field Gun Day 2008
On a hot sunny June (8) afternoon, the crowds turned out at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, to be part of a spectacular Open Day featuring the annual Royal Navy Field Gun Competition.
The Field Gun competition featured 21 crews from across the UK, Gibraltar and Naples competing for the coveted Brickwoods Trophy. The competition was fast and furious and was the culmination of seven weeks of intense training for the 18-men crews. During the hottest day of the summer so far the crowds roared as the final began; the tension was almost unbearable as the favourites Portsmouth Naval Base sprinted off the starting line, but in a challenge where the slightest error can cost you time it was HMS Sultan A crew who came in first to win the trophy that they last won in 1995!
Pusser's Rum provided liquid refreshment in the VIP area and the visiting public were able to sample Pusser's Grog.
The whole event was a huge success with thousands enjoying live music, free fun fair and incredible displays by the Tigers Motorcycle Display Team and the Sea Cadets Window ladder display team. Put a note in your diary for next year’s event, Saturday, June 6th.
